NFL Commissioner, Coach Open to Possible Medical Marijuana Use By Players

Posted: Updated:

Medical marijuana in the NFL? It's being taken seriously.  First NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asserted that the league should not rule out the use of marijuana to manage player's pain, and now the coach of the Super Bowl bound Seattle Seahawks is echoing that opinion.

Coach Pete Carroll told reporters that if doctors widely support the drug, that the NFL should be open to players using it.   The NFL currently bans the use of marijuana for any purpose.

"We have to explore and find ways to make our game a better game and take care of our players in whatever way possible," Carroll said during a Seahawks practice.  "Regardless of what other stigmas might be involved, we have to do this because the world of medicine is doing this."

Commissioner Roger Goodell said last week that the league would follow medical practioners' recommendations for the use of the drug.

"I'm not a medical expert," Goodell said, according to comments reported in USA Today. "We will obviously follow signs. We will follow medicine and if they determine this could be a proper usage in any context, we will consider that ... Our medical experts are not saying that right now."

Despite the fact that marijuana is illegal under federal laws,  there are 20 states as well as the District of Columbia that allow the use of the drug for medical purposes, and two states: Colorado and Washington, have now legalized the drug for recreational purposes.

Players asked about the use of marijuana to manage the chronic pain that frequently goes along with the battering physicality of professional football,  were open, but unwilling to commit to the idea enthusiastically- citing the drug's potential for abuse.
