Reports critical of MTA

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Three recent reports on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority including an audit by the NY State comptroller show mostly bad news for customers using Metro North, LIRR and the subways.

The reports suggest the MTA needs more oversight and a closer eye on capital improvement projects.

An audit by Thomas Di DiNapoli found that Metro North and LIRR wasted money on employee overtime for hand washing, commuting and changing clothes.

7 train riders will wait longer for the line to reach the far west side.  At a recent board meeting, the MTA said the project would not be completed until June or late summer and early fall.

Also, the MTA says the east side access project-- the largest infrastructure project in the country-- won't be completed until 2020 or 2021. The costs are expected to over run  by $1.5B.

Forecasts by independent consultants suggest completion between 2021 and 2023. The Federal Transit Administration cost estimate is $10.7 billion.

A pilot program to reduce trash in the subway system is working. As a result, the MTA says it will continue to remove refuse cans at an additional 29 stations.
