Propane shortage leads to rising prices

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed an executive order banning price gouging for propane.

The country is in the midst of the largest withdrawal of natural gas in 20 years.

Many families in metro Atlanta rely on propane gas to heat their homes and businesses, the price of propane has been heating up the last few weeks. That's because a large chunk of our propane supply has been shipped North during the recent cold snaps.

What little propane to be found in Georgia isn't cheap.

Jeremy McKeowen paid about $400 for a refill in December. This month, he got half of propane for the same amount of money. At first, he thought it had to be a mistake.

"I called multiple companies to find out if I was being price gauged...and they weren't that far off," said McKeowen.

McKeowen reached out to the Georgia Propane Gas Association, which regulates propane for the state, and was told that much of the Southeast propane supply is going to the Midwest to relieve pressure there.

"She basically said, 'Our hands are tied,'" said McKeowen.

The executive director of the association told FOX 5 that they are aware that emergency conditions are brewing as the cold persists. It recently included Georgia in a regional order to allow transport companies to increase supplies here.

If you rely on propane, be sure to check your tanks daily. Be prepared that you may not have access to a propane truck for several days after you call.

The Department of Transportation has issued a regional order for several states, including Georgia, to move propane more freely throughout the region.
