What happens when school districts go over snow day limit?

The snow days are piling up for many school districts across Michigan. Several districts have already canceled school for Tuesday in advance of the frigid temperatures.

The state allows the schools six snow days before they have to start making up the time. Making up the time can come by adding time to a school day or adding days to the school year.

"Our average is about three days and, to have this many is really very unusual," says Dennis McDavid, the superintendent of Berkley Schools. He says the district builds other days into the school year, as do many other districts, to keep room for more snow days. He says he and other superintendents have a conference call if conditions look bad to make the decision together.

"We look at the weather forecast, we check road conditions, we look at snow coming, how much snow is on the ground ... Our main consideration is always safety for our students and our staff," McDavid says.
