Preparations underway for possible snow in Georgia

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Crews across Georgia are getting ready for the possibility of snow on Tuesday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia Power both say they are prepared for the winter weather threat.

The metro Atlanta area could see some snow on Tuesday, according to the FOX 5 Storm Team. Several school systems south of the metro area have already announced closings in anticipation of the white stuff.

GDOT officials say trucks are ready to roll to get roads ready. They said they've learned lessons from the storm back in January 2011.

"We've been planning since 2011 to know where our materials are beneficial and what materials we need and what tools we need," said Natalie Dale of GDOT. "We've added a lot of salt barns to the area, we've added some equipment that we can add to our dump trucks so that they can spread ice and gravel at the same time."

Employees at Georgia Power are also keeping a close eye on the weather developments, trying to identify where snow and ice accumulations could take a toll on trees and power lines.

First-responders across the regions are making sure their gear is ready for emergencies.

Residents are urged to have some food and water stocked in case of power outages. Those with medications are urged to refills done before the storm, and don't forget to make provisions for your pets.

AIRPORT PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY

Several airlines, including Atlanta-based Delta, are waiving fees for customers booked on flights on Tuesday.

Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton told the Associated Press that 1,850 flights have been canceled system-wide Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. Of that number, Talton says 840 flights from Atlanta have been impacted.

Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport say they are prepared for the snow.  They said they have six 22-foot snow brooms, four 22-foot snow plows and three 75-foot de-icer trucks on standby. They also have 100,000 gallons of de-icing fluids for the taxiways and 50,000 pounds of salt and sand mix for the roadways.

Some airlines may have to scale back service, but most of those decision will be made on Tuesday. Travelers are urged to check with their airlines before their flights.

PROPANE PRICE GOUGING PROHIBITED

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed an executive order on Monday prohibiting price gouging for propane. The recent period of cold weather in the state has increased the demand for propane, causing a substantial prices increase in recent days, according the governor's office.

"Our families, farmers and small business are worried about getting the heat they need during times of frigid weather," Deal said in a statement. "They shouldn't have to worry about price gouging, and we aim to prevent that."

According to the statement, Deal recently ordered restrictions on propane transport be eased to help increase the state's supply of propane. Deal will revisit state actions if weather conditions don't improve soon, the statement said.
