DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

More trouble brewing for Detroit city council member George Cushingberry. A grassroots effort is underway to get him out of office.

People who showed up at a community meeting Saturday were expected to talk about Cushingberry and possibly mounting a campaign to oust him but when they arrived they learned Cushingberry was not on the agenda.

John Rodriguez is one of several people living in Detroit's District 2 who want to push "Cush" out of office. He was heading to the Northwest Detroit Coalition meeting. Robin Barnes was coming out.

"We thought it was for one thing but then at the last minute they changed it," she said. "I guess they have the right to do that it's a little disappointing."

She's not the only one frustrated the coalition wouldn't address the controversy surrounding the councilman. Their neighborhoods put him in office.

"Is it business as usual in Detroit with Mr Cushingberry in office?" Bill Wellborne asked. "Trouble finds him. He has a knack for getting into trouble."

Police say Cushingberry had half a cup of alcohol in his car when he was pulled over earlier this month and his passenger may have been illegally transporting marijuana. We stopped by his house Saturday but no one answered.

Community leaders holding the meeting say they're open to sending a letter to emergency manager Kevyn Orr asking that Cushingberry be stripped of his power and his pay. No word from Orr on whether he'd consider doing that.
