Court documents reveal chain of events that led to fatal truck crash on I-17

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A tragic chain of events detailed in court papers released Friday starting with a load that slid off a truck that led  to an accident that claimed one man's life and landed another man in jail.

The scene was horrific. Last Monday, a flatbed truck driven by 27 year-old Joseph Ryan O'Conner carrying empty gas cylinders lost part of its load on southbound I-17 near Thomas Rd. A Chevy SUV stopped to avoid the cylinders but a motorcyclist behind it swerved to avoid the SUV and hit a semi trying to stop in the next lane.

The motorcyclist, 27 year-old Steven Daniels died. Meanwhile, police say, the flatbed truck just kept going down the freeway and never stopped.

Tips to silent witness helped authorities learn the truck was registered to Delta Metals, a recycling company in Southwest Phoenix. And that Joseph O'Conner is the only truck driver working for the company.

Police say O'Conner asked his employer to delete GPS evidence that could connect him to the collision. And why would he do that? Because, police say, O'Conner faces aggravated assault charges and has been out on bond since last fall.

He may have wanted to avoid more trouble, but now he is in more of it than ever.

Joseph O'Conner faces criminal charges including negligent homicide, endangerment, failure to stay on scene of a fatal accident and others.

A benefit car wash is behind held on Saturday, January 25th 2014 at 43rd Ave. & Dunlap from 9am to 5pm.
