CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One person remains in critical condition Friday after the deadly pileup on I-94 last night.

The chain reaction crashes claimed the lives of three people and injured more than 20.

Indiana state police just released the 911 calls from moments after the crash.

The truck driver at the front end of the deadly 46-vehicle pile-up describes what happened to a 911 dispatcher.

"Traffic was at a dead stop, I came to a stop, I was sliding. I got to a stop and then everything just kind of piled up behind me and the other lanes behind me," a truck driver in the crash said.

State troopers said white out conditions caught drivers by surprise and blinded them, leading to the chain reaction crashes.

"It's completely blocked. I got like 6 vehicles and another semi piled up on my driver's side. And…it's bad," a truck driver said on Thursday.

Chicagoan Jerry Dalrymple was killed along with his dog as he attempted to travel to his new retirement property.

A Grand Rapids, Michigan couple, Thomas and Marilyn Wolma, was also killed in the pile up.

More than 20 people were hurt.

Those who were able to walk away from the horrific crash tried to help others.

One truck driver is heard speaking to another, who is pinned under the wreck. "Is your leg pinned underneath the steering wheel? Ok. I'm on the phone with police right now…The semi-truck that rear ended me, he's pinned real bad in his truck. His leg is hurt real bad."

After the big Michigan City pileup, Illinois officials are reminding motorists to be prepared if they find themselves in dangerous conditions.

IDOT said always keep your gas tank at least two-thirds full.

Keep an emergency kit, with jumper cables, blankets, food, and a first aid kit.

Always let someone know where you're going.

Finally, if your car does have trouble, call star 999 for help.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
