Broken elevator at senior home troubles elderly

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A broken elevator at an Atlanta senior home is forcing many residents to make long, painful walks to leave the facility or get a bite to eat.

For more than two weeks, residents at Mount Vernon Village -- where the average age is 84 – have been forced to walk a quarter-mile hallway to a second elevator just to eat.

"I think it's pitiful that the elevator hasn't been repaired as it's needed," Jo Ann Meaders said.

Meaders said many residents have been forced to stay inside their apartments. FOX 5's Nicole Estaphan found some residents who struggle just to take a few steps, preferring to spend the day downstairs so they don't have to make the trek more than once.

Resident managers said the elevator had some sort of issue two weeks ago and started smoking. The company hired to service it, Gemco, responded the next day, but managers say that wasn't quick enough and they have been given the runaround ever since. Residents said they've paid more than $100,000 in maintenance fee to the company over 30 years.

The owner of Gemco told FOX 5 that his contract states he is not responsible for the elevator feed, despite the $230 a month the facility pays. He would not provide FOX 5 with a copy of that contract. The senior home said they don't have a copy of the contract either.

The owner told FOX that it the elevator has a bad electrical panel and it will take time to find a replacement.

The saying art is autobiographical takes on a whole new meaning when your canvas is a fully nude human body, as it is for artist Andy Golub. Andy along with 30 other artists and 45 Technicolor models paraded around several Manhattan hotspots over the weekend for NYC Body Painting day. Believe or not, this is completely legal in New York City.
