Shaun White: Russia Is Calling

Posted: Updated:

Shaun White finally made up his mind about whether to compete in the Winter X Games this week in Aspen or concentrate on the Winter Olympics in Sochi next month.

Shaun says he will skip the X Games.  "I've been competing in the X Games since I was 13 years old, they are a huge part of why I am where I am and they are vital to the sport," Shaun told espn.com.  "Unfortunately, when I arrived at the mountain and looked over the schedule, I knew I wasn't going to be able to complete the kind of training I know I need in order to prepare for Sochi. It's an incredibly tough decision for me and it's not something I take lightly."

Shaun qualified for Sochi in slopestyle, which is making its Olympic debut, and in halfpipe, in which he is the two-time defending Olympic champion.

Shaun joins Steve Edwards and Lisa Breckenridge on Good Day L.A.

Fun facts about Shawn White (Source: Wikipedia)

1.) Shawn is an American professional snowboarder and skateboarder. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. He holds the X-Games records for gold medals and highest overall medal count, and has won 10 ESPY Awards.

2.) White's skateboard career took place during the same time he was rising through the snowboard ranks. White quickly drew the eyes of many in the skateboarder scene including professional skateboarder Tony Hawk. At this point Hawk befriended the nine-year-old White at a local skatepark and mentored him, helping him turn pro in skateboarding at the age of 17. White has gone on to win many titles on his skateboard, most notably winning the overall title of Action Sports Tour Champion, as well as being the first person to compete in and win both the Summer and Winter X Games in two different sports.

'Shaun White: Russia Calling' airs Saturday night, January 25 at 8:00pm on NBC.
