Detroit police conduct another major crime sweep

DETROIT (WJBK) - Local and state police and federal agents are conducting sweeps in two Detroit neighborhoods for people wanted on warrants and for drug violations.

Detroit police say "Operation Restore Order East and West" targets parts of the 5th Precinct on the city's eastside and 8th Precinct on the west side.

The sweeps started at noon Thursday and were expected to end at 8 p.m. The department says it has more than 100 outstanding warrants for people living in those areas.

"The arrest warrants range from murder, robberies, everything - every felony offense," Chief James Craig said Thursday.

Several dozen people were arrested last month during a raid at an east side housing complex. A similar raid in November at an apartment complex also resulted in dozens of arrests.

This latest operation comes after Detroit experienced a significant drop in crime. Homicides are down about 14 percent and non-fatal shootings are down about 8 percent.
