GDOT wants your feedback on Highway 20

Posted: Updated:
CUMMING, Ga. -

The DOT is in the early stages of making improvements to Highway 20, between I-575 and GA-400. They're asking for feedback on possible route changes, and they want to hear from you.

Some homeowners and business owners from Canton to Cumming are sounding their own alarms, emailing their customers and neighbors, urging them to speak up now, while they have the chance.

The DOT says improvements are needed, and they're looking at a lot of options, including alternate routes. Some of those possible routes have people who live in the area concerned.

"Two of the alternatives for this segment of 20 is not only impactful, it runs right through two adjoining communities, which really doesn't make much sense to us," says Joe Springer, an HOA spokesperson for The Villages of Concord Farms.

The project may be five years down the road, but right now, it's decision making time for the 25 mile stretch of Highway 20. Last month the DOT held two meetings to show off the proposed routes and get some feedback.

"We're going to narrow down those comments that we got at those public open houses to really narrow down those alternatives and come back to the community with what we feel are some viable options," explains DOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.

Several neighborhoods in the Ducktown community are banding together to stand as one voice about the proposals. "Collectively we represent about a thousand residents, which is significant and we think we should be heard," Springer says.

Local business owners, like Salon La Faye owner Rhonda Brown, are worried about the impact on their now-prominent locations. "My reaction was...that's not good. The impact of 20 going somewhere else will be devastating to my business because then I will be on 'Old Highway 20,'" adds Brown.

The DOT says traffic volume has reached a dangerous level. "We know that population is going to grow in that area, so it will not get better-- it will only get worse, so we want to create a safe area that is a great commute option," explains Dale.

"Once the door closes, we may not be heard, so we're trying to act now," Springer says.
