Protecting your newborn from whooping cough

Whooping cough is highly contagious and can be deadly, and doctors are saying certain people need to take serious precautions.

"Any baby under 6 months of age is still susceptible; un-immunized is highly susceptible," warns Dr. Nancy Mannisto from Royal Oak Pediatrics.

Whooping cough cases are steadily rising in many parts of the country, including Michigan. Washtenaw County is seeing the biggest spread. Berkley resident Connie Smith believes the best way to protect her 11-week-old daughter, Fiona, is to ask others to protect themselves.

"It's one thing to ask everybody to use some hand sanitizer when they come over, now it's like, 'Hey, did you have your booster for the DTap?'" she jokes.

But, the reality is, to create a protective cocoon for newborns the CDC wants anyone in close contact with infants to be current with their vaccination. The fact is this immunity fades over time, which is partly to blame for the disease comeback. The other problem is lack of  immunizations.

"It's so sad when you read about these babies dying of Pertussis; I can prevent that by getting her vaccinated," Smith says.

"When people choose not to immunize, they're leaving open pockets of vulnerability and they're not just making their kids susceptible, they're making other people susceptible," says Dr. Mannisto.
