Low temperatures blamed for high heating bills

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The cold weather is disrupting more than just daily routines – it's hitting some folks hard in the pocketbooks!

Litisha Pearson latest gas bill was almost $200.

SCANA told FOX 5 that its customers have used 60 to 70 percent more gas this January compared to last year. Pearson is a great example of that; she's bumped her thermostat up to 72. But there's a high price for the heat.

Josephine Mosley uses propane gas in her house. With the frigid weather, she's running through the $300 tanks in record time.

Jennifer Jenkins sells propane for Spalding Gas Company and although she says prices have not gone up much here, nationwide, propane has hit price levels not seen in nearly 25 years in part because demand is so high.

"Customers ordering gas every two weeks as opposed to every two months or more. Their consumption is going up a great deal," Jenkins said.

With consumption going up, Van Morris' inventory is going out. He sells firewood on Jonesboro Road and he was all but sold out by Christmas.

"The majority of my customers are people that have pretty nice homes that can't afford natural gas and it's a shame I guess," Morris said.

Out of over 500 hopefuls only a handful will join the Brooklyn Nets Kids Dance Team. The Nets held auditions this week at LIU Brooklyn. Adorable Bronx native Arielle was turned away last year but this time around she's made it through to the final round of the auditions. But even those who were on the team last year still have to try out.
