Sentencing under way for congressman's fundraiser

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A witness at the initial trial of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich will testify at the sentencing of a Chicago-area businessman convicted of bribing doctors for surgery-center referrals.

Rajinder Bedi testifies Wednesday at Raghuveer Nayak's sentencing in Chicago.

Bedi testified at Blagojevich's trial that he attended a meeting with then- U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Nayak to discuss how Blagojevich could name Jackson to President Barack Obama's old Senate seat.

Blagojevich is serving a 14-year corruption sentence for trying to sell or trade that seat.

Nayak wasn't charged in Blagojevich's case. But prosecutors argue he "corrupted the political process" in his dealings on the Senate seat and that should mean more prison time.

Nayak's hearing could take two days as witnesses are called to help determine an appropriate sentence.
