CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Illinois coach John Groce says he went too far in a series of outbursts during a loss Saturday to Michigan State.

Groce argued several times with officials during the 78-62 loss to the No. 4 Spartans. He was given a technical foul after throwing his suit jacket.

Groce says Wednesday that he crossed the line between having emotion and being too emotional.

The second-year coach said he spoke with his wife and his father before acknowledging that the exchanges with officials were out of line.

But he said he didn't think his outbursts hurt his team.

Illinois (13-6, 2-4 Big Ten) has lost four games in a row. Groce has engaged in extended, angry exchanges with officials in the past two games, against Michigan State and Purdue.
