OAK LAWN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A southwest suburban man was arrested for trying to lure a 17-year-old girl into his car last week in as she walked home from school in Oak Lawn.

The girl was on Kilpatrick Avenue near 92nd Street on Jan. 13 when Terrence P. Loftus drove up to her and asked if she needed a ride, Oak Lawn police said in a statement.

The girl said no but Loftus kept following her, trying to continue the conversation and motioning for her to get in the car, police said.

The girl locked herself in her house, and memorized the license plate of the blue-grey Chrysler 4-door, which was registered to Loftus's 86-year-old mother, the statement said.

He was arrested and the girl identified him in a line-up Saturday at the Oak Lawn police station, police said.

Loftus, 59, of the 6900 block of Highland Drive in Palos Hills, was charged with one count of child abduction, according to police.

Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil ordered him held on a $100,000 bond during a hearing Monday, police said.

He will next appear in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office.
