Pasadena Debates Narrowing Colorado Boulevard, Widening Sidewalks

Posted: Updated:

The city of Pasadena is discussing making  Colorado Boulevard  more pedestrian friendly.

The city is considering making the iconic strip as much as two lanes narrower, and then using that space for wider sidewalks and "parklets" with seating areas.

That proposal should go before the city council soon, and has garnered much support from city officials.

The transformation of Colorado Boulevard began more than a decade ago , when the street began a conversion from mostly retail businesses to a more residential strip.   More than a thousand apartment and condo units have been added since 2003.

Now, several hotels are planned for the area, including one for the site left vacant by Macy's at the Paseo Colorado mall, and another at the former Ford dealership on Colorado and Hill Avenue.

The additions are prompting city leaders to make the area more balanced toward walkers, rather than drivers.

In an interview with the  L.A. Times, Mayor Bill Bogaard said ,"Pasadena is pursuing a broader concept of what streets are about.  They're not simply for moving cars as fast as you can. Streets are corridors of society and community."

But not everyone is a fan of the idea, including some local residents who thing the Boulevard is overcrowded already, and lacks parking spaces.

Step through the doors of Hope's Land of Candy in Island Park, Long Island and you''ll be taking a trip back in time. There's no WIFI but they do have a Victrola piano. And then there's the candy.. lots and lots of it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
