TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Despite an investigation by the Secret Service, a candidate for state house is standing by a Tweet in which he said he agreed that the president ought to be "executed."

"I know that we don't use hanging as a method of execution here in the U.S. anymore, so be it. Whatever method is applicable for the situation, I just want justice to be served," said the candidate, Joshua Black, during an interview at a Walmart parking lot in St. Petersburg.

There's a lot that grinds his gears about the president.

But his tweet, where Black agreed with someone who said the president should be "hung high," came from anger over a 2011 drone strike that killed Anwar al-Awalki, an American-born al Qaeda planner in Yemen.

Al-Awlaki's son died soon after in a strike officials later admitted was a mistake.

"When George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, he got a trial. And whatever was going to happen came out of that trial. President Obama kills a 15year-old, somebody else's teenage son, and gets no trial," Black said.

The lone Republican candidate for House District 68 is taking more than a little heat.

A Republican candidate for the house seat in the 67th district, Chris Latvala, called him an "embarrassment" and the "loser of the week."

"I don't care," said Black, of the criticism.

His Democratic opponent is Dwight Dudley, who has already out-fund-raised Black 14-to-1.

"It's pretty evident he is not someone who is serious or responsible or appropriate to run for public office," said Dudley.

Right before black drove off to be interviewed by the Secret Service, Black insisted his comments weren't threats.

We asked whether he was concerned his words could incite violence against the president.

"Not with all the guns he has around him, no. That's the whole reason for having Secret Service, that's the whole reason for having firearms, is personal protection."

Our political editor, Craig Patrick, says that even though the St. Petersburg area has seen a recent Democratic trend, that particular district is still very even in terms of party registration numbers.

Patrick would not be surprised if another Republican jumps into the race because of the dustup over Black's comments.

"I'm past impeachment. It's time to arrest and hang him high," the controversial tweet stated.
