Doctors say Spanx may be bad for your health

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Whether you like Spanx or not.... Doctors say watch out.... Spanx and some other shape wear undergarments are squeezing your organs.

Dr. Manny Alvarez with Fox News says for short term use they are ok but the problem is with continual use.

And some of the trouble you could be facing includes bladder infections, bowel problems, acid reflux and blood clots.

“It's like wearing a tourniquet” Dr. Alvarez said. “It cuts off blood flow and if you have a predisposition to blood clots.  These could be a problem.”

He says wearing Spanx is like someone sitting on your belly for hours at a time and squishing your organs.  But shape wear couldn't do its job if it wasn't tight.

Since Spanx is the most well-known shape wear, Fox 5 News contacted the company to see what it had to say about the health issues.  It has not replied yet.

Dr. Alvarez says wearing shape wear is ok every once in a while, but not every day.
