POLK COUNTY, Ga. -

The mother of a 13-year-old charged with felony armed robbery talked to FOX 5 on Monday.

The teenager from Rockmart is facing felony charges after allegedly breaking into a home, stealing a Jeep and holding two convenience store clerks at gunpoint.

Employees at the store said the teen never asked for money and only wanted a vehicle to get to Tennessee.

Michelle Sorrells said the teen wanted to see his grandmother.

"He never aimed the gun at anyone when he went in," Sorrells said.  "He did not want money. He did not want anything but a vehicle so that he could get to his grandfather's house."

Sorrells said that the family has had a strained relationship with the grandfather for years.

The teen was arrested after wrecking the vehicle he had stolen from the store.

Sorrells is pleading for mercy for her son, who she said had not had any previous run-ins with the law.

"Once he's in the system like this, he's going to spend the next  10 to15 years in jail and then that is the only life –he's going to have spent more life in jail than out of jail and that is all he is going to know," said Sorrells.

The teen faces numerous charges, including armed robbery, burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His mother said he remains in juvenile detention.
