Northeast Philadelphia -

Two people were found shot and killed in their Northeast Philadelphia home and police are searching for the gunman as neighbors ask why the mother and son were found this afternoon, inside a home.

Neighbors say they heard a little commotion the night before this incident but didn't think anything of it.

Now it has them wondering after two of their neighbors were found shot to death. Pure shock and despair for those that knew and loved a mother and son found shot to death inside their Lawncrest home on the 300 block of Stevens Street.

Police say the victims were shot in the head by a semi-automatic weapon. They are identified by friends and neighbors as 49-year-old Donna Muller and her 22-year-old son Rich Muller.

Brian Zukoski overwhelmed by the sudden death of his college friend.

"It didn't hit me yet really, honestly, Rich was a great guy." Brian said. "He was looking forward to getting his four year degree because we just got done a two year school."

He knew the mother too.

"She was very welcoming. If anybody needed someplace to stay or something to eat you could stay at his home." Brian said.

Police say an unidentified woman found the bodies in a second floor hallway and bedroom around 3pm Sunday. Neighbors say the didn't hear any gunshots.

Crime scene investigators soon populated the property looking for clues interviewing anyone that might know something.

"We have some family members, we have some friends, we have some neighbors that were all transported to Homicide." Philadelphia Police Dept Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

While police search for a suspect neighbors are searching for that feeling they once had before all this…called piece of mind.

"It shakes you up. You think you live on a quiet street," Neighbor John Downey said.

Police have not yet recovered the murder weapon and they say there was no sign of forced entry.

As for the neighbors, they say they've been rocked by violence before with another murder on that block just a few years ago.

Police responded to the Brooklyn Bridge where two whitewashed American flags were raised on Tuesday. It is not clear who raised the flags or why. The American flags that are normally up at the bridge appeared to have been removed. The white flags were placed on the stone supports that hold cables above the span. Several officers scaled the bridge and lowered one of the flags at about 11 a.m. and the second about 20 minutes later.
