Local mother battles rare flesh-eating bacteria

(WJBK) -

A mother from Madison Heights is fighting a rare flesh-eating bacteria. A family friend is asking metro Detroit to share their thoughts and prayers with the family during the difficult time.

Carla Crandell was taken to Providence Hospital Sunday with symptoms she thought resembled the flu.

"I thought this would just be another trip to the hospital and we'd be home shortly, but we've been terrified," her son Rick Crandell tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom.

Terrified, because Carla is fighting a flesh-eating bacteria that appears to be traveling through her body. Doctors have given her less than a 50 percent change to survive.

"They were very attentive and responded quickly. They did emergency surgery trying to stop the flesh-eating bacteria in her leg before it spread elsewhere," Rick says, but she will have to face an amputation of her left leg in the coming week. The bacteria likely came from a rupture in Carla's intestines and lodged itself in her leg.

"I'm trying to take on the bills myself so my dad can be at her bedside and be there for her," Rick says. "Life is very, very fragile and valuable ... it can change in an instant."

Every day, those who live and work in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn drive and bike and walk across their canal, growing a little more accustomed to but no less disgusted by its scent and appearance. Once the busiest canal in the United States, the Gowanus now bears the distinction as perhaps the most polluted body of water in the nation. No one knows exactly how polluted because few have summoned enough courage to dive into its murky depths to investigate.
