DETROIT (WJBK) -- Police are working to piece together events that led to the death of a Livonia grandmother found on Detroit's east side hours after she went missing.

Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody says 88-year-old Lorraine McKaig was found nearly frozen, but still breathing, on the grounds of the Coleman A. Young International Airport after 11 p.m. Wednesday. Woody says earlier McKaig's vehicle crashed through an airport fence on McNichols, but she had no apparent injuries from the accident. She later died at a hospital.

"Why was she over there?" asked McKaig's granddaughter, Jodie Blankenship. "It's just so odd."

Blankenship said her grandmother followed a strict routine that included lunch at Daly Restaurant, located near the location of a massive warehouse fire.

Blankenship says her grandmother was apparently redirected from her route on Merriman Road. The road was closed due to the fire, but McKaig tried to get around a traffic barrier and was ticketed.

McKaig's daughter, Sue Modzelewski, 61, of Blooomfield Hills believes she was turned in the wrong direction. ""She drove all the way to (Coleman A. Young International Airport). That's what we believe happened," Modzelewski tells the Detroit Free Press.

McKaig was reported missing around 4 p.m.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Detroit and Livonia police say the investigation is ongoing.
