Church struck by burglars 7 times

Posted: Updated:
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

Burglars have struck a tiny church in College Park seven times since October.

Members of the Galilee Way of the Cross church say they've been battered by the crime, but they are not broken. They say they'll do whatever it takes to keep the doors open for worship.

Still, the numerous burglaries in the last few months have hit the small congregation of  about 45 pretty hard.

Thieves have stolen a piano, some speakers, microphones and a CD burner. In the kitchen, a microwave, utensils – even paper towels – were taken. Next door at their community center, where free clothing giveaways and other services are held, computers, a chainsaw, kerosene  heaters and other items were stolen. In all, the losses amount to about $8,000.

The community center and the church were both heavily fortified with iron bars, nonetheless the burglars managed to pry them open to get in.

Church leaders suspect someone was watching the place because the break-ins occurred after services Wednesdays and Saturdays.

College Park police say they arrested a sex offender who failed to register. They say that he will likely be charged with at least two burglaries at the church.

The church has installed burglar alarms and surveillance cameras in hopes of stopping future thefts.

There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
