(WJBK) -

Peter Gerard Jones, 46, was video arraigned Wednesday at 52-1 District Court in Novi and now faces charges for the death of his 84-year-old neighbor, Bernice Schauefle. Police say Jones murdered Schauefle January 13, 2014 at her home in the Country Place condominiums near Meadowbrook and Eight Mile Road. Investigators say a trail of evidence lead them straight to Jones.

"Michigan State Police crime lab was able to locate shoe impressions inside of the residence. Novi detectives were able to match these shoe impressions to the shoes that Peter Jones was currently wearing. We were able to locate a dish towel with fresh-dried blood out, some jewelry and a makeup bag. The dish towel that had the blood on it matched the towels from our victim's residence, and also some of the jewelry that we located also matched the victim's jewelry," Det. Randy Mince from Novi police said in court.

Jones faces Homicide - Murder First Degree - Premeditated and Homicide - Felony Murder. A conviction for either charge carries a life sentence with the possibility of parole. Jones is currently on parole through the State of Michigan for manslaughter and robbery. Jones also has an extensive criminal record in the Florida.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100 or anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.
