Detroit Police are praising the Good Samaritan who just may have helped save a young girl's life.

"We are seeing more and more of our citizens, not just in Detroit but in the Detroit metropolitan area, step up and actually take some action and protect the people around them," says Sgt. Michael Woody from the Detroit Police Department.

Police say Tuesday around 8 p.m. the 15 year old was walking along Philip Street on Detroit's east side looking for her cell phone when she was approached by a man.

"During the conversation, at some point, he strikes her in the head, puts her in the vehicle, begins driving with her. During the drive he's making some sexually explicit comments to her, grabbing himself," says Woody.

The girl was able to jump out of the vehicle near Commor and Dyar streets in Hamtramck and started screaming for help. Someone who lived nearby called 911.

"Hamtramck police responded and were able to get enough information from the young girl to actually get the suspect into custody fairly quickly," says Woody.

Sources identified the suspect as 45-year-old Anthony William Fortson, a Hamtramck resident who's been in trouble with the law before. Records show Fortson is currently out on parole. He's been in and out of jail since the late 90s, arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon and, years later, for home invasion, larceny and possession of a controlled substance.

Police say Fortson was arrested at his house and that he did not chase the 15 year old when she escaped. During a police interview on Wednesday the victim told police she was allowed to sit in the front seat, and her hands and legs were not tied up.

Detroit police say aside from getting struck in the head the victim experienced no other assault, and Fortson will likely face charges for the kidnapping and the attempted sexual assault.

A Delta Air Lines flight from La Guardia Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida, was diverted to Jacksonville because of a dispute between passengers over a reclining seat. Delta reportedly says the flight was diverted Monday night when a woman got into an argument with a passenger behind her when the woman was trying to recline her seat while the other passenger was trying to sleep on the tray table.
