A combination of a burst water pipe and a leaky roof caused the halt of a church service and the removal of the congregation in the South Side New City neighborhood.

Fire crews responded to the two-story building on the 4900 block of South Ashland Avenue for calls of a leaky roof around 10:26 a.m., where a group of people had gathered on the first floor for a church service, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Juan Hernandez said.

They discovered a burst water pipe on the second floor of the building and stopped its water flow, Hernandez said.

But the roof continued to leak from an unknown cause, Hernandez said. No one was injured in the incident.

Fire officials shut the building down and removed the first-floor occupants, Hernandez said. The city's Department of Buildings is at the scene investigating the cause.
