What to do if your car spins off the road

You spun off the road. Now what?

If you are stuck in the snow, but you're not hurt and you believe your car is driveable, Michigan State Police says you can:

+ Call 911 to get a wrecker
+ Call a wrecker directly
+ Call a friend to tow you out
+ Call your insurance company to get you pulled out

However if your car has more than $1,000 worth of damage on the expressway State Police want to send a troopers out and file a police report.

Activate your hazard flashers and stay inside your vehicle.

However, Louis Maiberger adds that if your car is impeding traffic or partially on the roadway, being inside or outside of the car are both very dangerous. Maiberger is one of Michigan's longest operating tow truck drivers. He has owner Ross Towing in Southfield for 51 years.

"I've seen people who have been killed by a drunk driver while waiting in their car," he recalls.

If you get stuck, your charged cellphone is your best bet and if you get a wrecker driver who you believe is charging you too much you can negotiate the fee. "We got predator towing companies all over the city all over Michigan.  When they come up with a price that you think is too high generally it is too high," Maiberger says.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.

Heavily armed police officers descended on a home in Long Beach, Long Island, Tuesday afternoon thinking they might find a grisly murder scene. Instead they found a terrified woman who had no clue what they were talking about and her teenaged son playing video games. "We received a phone call from a gentleman who stated he had just shot his mother and his brother," Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney said. "Unfortunately, this is a terrible national problem for law enforcement."
