Almost there: More Detroit streets cleared after heavy snowfall

Metro Detroit is still digging out from several inches of snow and ice, but more Detroit residents are looking outside to find a plowed street Thursday. However, many streets are still covered in snow and ice.

A school bus with kids inside stuck in several inches of snow was spotted on Detroit's east side. The bus had to be towed by Detroit Public Schools. Around the corner, a car was found stuck in the middle of the road and the driver was nowhere to be found.

Fox 2 was at Fullerton and Petosky in Detroit on Monday. At one end of the street a stranded taxi was blocking the road. On the other end of the street was several inches of ice after a water main break. More than 70 water main breaks were reported citywide. Fox 2's Maurielle Lue returned to that intersection Thursday, where residents were happy to report the road had been cleared. The sidewalks are still completely iced over in some spots, however, and some heavy ice chunks are still on the side of the road.

"I think the City is responding a lot quicker to the needs of the city. I've recently moved back to Detroit from the suburbs, and that was one of my concerns. And, as a taxpayer in Detroit, I'm happy," says Kim Brown.

Thursday the City sent out inspectors, followed up on calls from snowed-in residents and plowed streets that were skipped in the first big plow. Mayor Duggan said plow drivers would not be paid until all their work as done.

      A memo from NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton instructs police officers to use discretion when ticketing elderly and disabled pedestrians for jaywalking. This comes after an 84-year-old jaywalker was injured during his arrest on the Upper West Side in January. The memo which was was dated April 15 reads:  "Use discretion when elderly or handicapped persons are observed jaywalking.... If pedestrian actions are not causing a safety risk... warn and admonish the violator instead."
