Relieving dry, itchy skin during the winter months

Get ready for the soak and grease. What is it, exactly? One way doctors recommend fighting dry, winter skin.

"Dry skin can be really itchy and annoying and also, when you have the dry skin that's itchy you can get cracks in your skin, and it can hurt!

You might think drinking plenty of water can cure your dry skin from the inside-out, but Henry Ford dermatologist Laurie Kohen says there's no proof that works. But she says water can help moisturize from the outside-in - if you subscribe to her soak and grease method.

"When you get out of your tepid shower, you want to pat your skin dry not wipe all the moisture off your skin, and then immediately after that's when you want to apply your thick, heavy moisturizing creams and ointments to trap in some of that moisture from the shower," she explains.

OTHER TIPS

+ Keep showers/baths short and lukewarm
+ Dr. Kohen recommends the creams you scoop out of a jar
+ Use creams with ceremides (fatty acids that protect your skin)

Also, in this weather a flare up of something beyond an itchy irritation, like psoriasis or eczema, is common.

"On the hands they can actually feel and look the same at times, so both of those might be made worse by our harsh conditions here in Detroit," Kohen says.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

+ When your skin condition becomes intolerable
+ If your cracked skin has gotten infected
