FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - An ex-convict is charged with murder in an alleged robbery accomplice's death during a shootout with a sheriff's deputy.

Pinal County Attorney Lando Voyles says a grand jury indictment charges 23-year-old Adam Chavez of Queen Creek in the Dec. 23 death of 32-year-old Matthew Clowers.

A sheriff's deputy shot Clowers near Eloy after a chase. The charge began on Interstate 10 when the deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description of one used in the armed robbery of an adult boutique near Picacho.

Sheriff's officials said Chavez was released from an Arizona prison last year after serving eight months for theft and endangerment. Clowers also an ex-convict.

Chavez is being held in lieu of $250,000 bond. Voyles spokesman Jim Knupp says he doesn't know if Chavez has an attorney.
