With snowstorms come accidents, but here at the Macomb County Communication Technology Center, or what they refer to as COMTEC, this state-of-the-art building allows them to keep a closer eye on the roads.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel says about 60 cameras are able to zoom in on major intersections. The center is hoping to soon have 300 cameras available.

"We can see the roads and see what's actually taking place. When people do call us with a troubled area, maybe an accident that's blocking an intersection or we see ... an area that has a lot of ice that needs more salt, we know how to dispatch an area to and from those areas. Even if we realize there's some blowing snow, and drifting snow, we've got to get a plow over there," he explains.

Hackel believes the center has expedited response time from salt trucks and plows since dispatchers are able to spot, or foresee, problem areas on the monitors.

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.
