Mother, son, 6 pets escape town house fire

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A Phoenix family is trying to pick up the pieces after a fast moving fire burned through their town home.

They're temporarily staying in a studio, but they're looking for a new place to live -- somewhere that will allow them to stay with their six beloved pets.

"I'm feeling a little lost .. I feel like I'm kind of standing on quicksand," said Cari Cavuoto.

There are a lot of unanswered questions for Cavuoto after the fire that started in her kitchen Sunday evening gutted a big part of her house while she was at Sunday mass.  The fire left her, her 13-year-old son and her six pets -- all homeless.

"These three dogs were already out and the other three.. my little dog and two cats were laying lifeless in towels with the oxygen masks on," she said.

"The biggest thing is trying to find a place to live," said Cavuoto, but she says that's been a difficult task with six pets -- four dogs and two cats, all adopted -- all over the age of 10.

"If it were just me, I could work three jobs and live anywhere.  I care take I have my son.. I have these guys that I took on and my youngest dog is 10.5 so at this stage of life, you don't say let's see where else these guys can go.. this is where they stay."

Three of her pets are still at a veterinarian's office.  She is hoping they will all make a full recovery.

One of Cavuoto's fellow church goers has generously donated to pay for the vet bill.
