Detroiters navigating unplowed roads, ice patches from water main breaks

Blowing snow and icy roads are creating difficult driving conditions all over Michigan. Some motorists in Detroit are navigating unplowed streets plus severe ice patches from water main breaks.

About 70 water mains were reported ruptured on Tuesday in Detroit. Two of the worst are at Jefferson Avenue and Conner Street, and the second at Outer Drive and Conner Street.

Detroit averages about six dozen water main breaks a day this time of year, but the polar vortex is making it difficult for crews to clean up the mess. The Detroit Water Department is urging residents to call their 24 hour emergency hotline if they spot a problem.

Gary Brown, Chief Compliance Officer, says the city is prioritizing the water main breaks. "If it's a public safety issue, or if someone doesn't have water, we're putting those ahead of one that may be broken in the street, may be a nuisance, but isn't a public safety hazard," he explains.

He adds the city is working as fast as it can to clear city roads, but the subzero temperatures make it difficult. Public transportation has been halted across Detroit as well. The Detroit People Mover shut down Tuesday due to the cold temperatures. 40 percent of Detroit's bus fleet was also out of commission because of freezing gas lines and starting problems.

Campus Martius Park is also closed because the temperatures are too cold to operate.

When people in Bushwick want a green machine juice blend they visit Leticia Castillo's Owl Juice Pub. But first they must find the owl. "We been doing fine without a sign," Castillo says.

Only 10 percent of people who get CPR from a bystander actually survive. But two young men in Westchester County have now patented a device that could dramatically increase those odds and save lives. John and Chris DiCapua's sitting room in their parents' Westchester County home has had a unique guest lying around for quite a while now: a CPR dummy. What began as an idea from their time as Boy Scouts is now a device that could potentially save lives.
