ROCKVILLE, Md. -

It could be a couple of days before residents can return to a Rockville nursing home that has no electricity in the bitter cold. 28 residents and nine staffers were removed from Raphael House on Dunster Road after a broken water pipe and leak in an electrical room caused a power outage.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene with a medical ambulance bus. Many of the elderly residents needed assistance getting on the bus with their walkers and wheelchairs. It was definitely a disruption in their normal routine.

The bus took them right next door to Saint Raphael Catholic Community Church. The church and the assisted living facility are associated with the Archdiocese of Washington.

Relatives of the seniors said they were pleased with the way administrators handled the crisis.

A spokesperson for the county health department says alternate housing was found for the handful of seniors, who did not have relatives in the immediate area to take them in.
