NILES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Chicago man has been charged with stealing a charity collection jar from a store at Golf Mill Mall in north suburban Niles.

The robbery occurred about 4:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at a store inside the mall at 239 Golf Mill Center, where the collection jar was setting on the customer service desk, Niles police said.

James J. Pedro, 55, placed the collection box, which contained about $200, inside his jacket and walked out the front door, according to a statement from police.

Pedro, a regular customer of the store, was contacted and voluntarily surrendered to authorities, police said. He was charged with one misdemeanor count of theft.

Pedro, of the 4100 block of North Leamington, was released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 24.
