Questionable Sidewalk Repairs

Posted: Updated:
Ventura, CA -

Questionable sidewalk repairs have some homeowners in Oak Park, an incorporated part of Ventura County, furious. They received letters letting them know that it is their responsibility to pay for sidewalk repairs. The homeowners say the sidewalks that were repaired didn't need any fixing. The residents took before-and-after photos of the sidewalks.

Looking at the pictures, there doesn't appear to be any changes. Residents received bills in the hundreds-of-dollars for the repairs.  Resident Ruth Haney says, "Our sidewalk repair was frivolous. It had nothing wrong with it. They claim there was damage underneath, but our pictures clearly show there was nothing underneath at all."

Linda Parks, with the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, told the residents that she plans on asking the county to change its policy. Parks says, essentially, that the sidewalks were put in at the county's direction and " to make everyone pay for them seems to be very unfair".

But, there is no guarantee the board will agree with her. One resident summed it up like this, "I feel like every homeowner on this block in this community that has a similar situation is getting gouged by the county for no reason, just for extra income."

Going off to college is an exciting time for the entire family, especially for the upcoming freshman. But with technology, parents can be in touch all the time. What's too much and what's just enough? Freshman move-in day seems to be harder on the parents than the students at Stony Brook University.

Nearly all 1,100 facilities providing services in the city's new universal pre-kindergarten program are ready to open on time after passing health and safety inspections. City officials said Friday they expect the eight remaining pre-K schools to remedy violations by Sept. 4's opening day. If they don't, affected children will be temporarily enrolled in other facilities.
