Dr. Mike Explains Frostbite

PHILADELPHIA -

What is frostbite? As the temperatures go down, your extremities, like your nose or your toes, feel reduced circulation. If the blood flow stops, then it can really cause damage.

Signs and symptoms include: Cold/numb skin. Difficulty moving area. Blisters. If you're fingers turn black, you have to seek medical attention immediately because you're at risk for losing those fingers.

If you do get frostbite, make sure not to rub or put your frostbitten area near a stove or fire. Warm the area gently by putting it into 40 degree water. And always seek medical attention.

The key to frostbite is prevention. Cover up, and remember to wear water proof shoes. Many of us forget that part about shoes and wear shoes that are inadequate for this weather.
