Bank robbery foiled when dye pack explodes in bag

UNION CITY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a would-be bank robber's bid to escape with thousands of dollars was foiled when a dye pack exploded inside a bag containing the money.

Union City police tell The Jersey Journal (http://bit.ly/1a9bffQ) that the robber entered a crowded TD Bank branch around 11:45 a.m. Saturday and soon flashed a gun to the teller. After getting an undisclosed amount of cash, the man fled but the dye pack - disguised as a wad of cash - went off two blocks from the bank.

The man then dropped the bag containing the money and fled on foot. He remained at large on Sunday, but authorities say several surveillance cameras in the area captured his image as he fled.

The robbery is being investigated by Union City police and the FBI.
