Suspect dead, officer injured after burglary shootout

Posted: Updated:

A shootout between a burglary suspect and responding police officers leaves one man dead and sends an officer to the hospital Saturday afternoon.

According a spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Police Department, two officers on a nearby call responded to the 3800 block of Smokemist Trace around 4:10 p.m. after a report of a burglary in progress. Officers checking the residence came under fire. They returned fire, striking and killing what they believe may be the burglary suspect.

Officers arrived about 3 blocks away and 5 minutes before the burglary call on a separate call of a domestic dispute that turned into a stabbing in the 3600 block of Willow Wood Way. Officer says they checked the area, but didn't find a victim or scene. Shortly after the police-involved shooting, the victim returned to the original scene and was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.

Police now believe the suspected burglar that was killed during the shootout also was the person who stabbed the man at the other home.

The names of the officers, the stabbing victim and the man killed have not yet been released.

It's a running joke that if you mention the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center to nearly anyone in Hollywood they're going to know exactly what you're talking about because odds are they might have gotten their first big break there. Would you believe some Hollywood's biggest stars -- Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Angela Bassett -- got their start in a big red barn in the middle of nowhere.
