PLAINFIELD, Conn. (AP) -- About 40 people have been evacuated after a fire broke out in an assisted living complex in Plainfield.
Fire officials said Friday afternoon two people were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The injuries weren't believed to be life-threatening.
The fire broke out at about 4 p.m. at the 22-unit Lawton House. Residents were taken to the nearby Villa Marie Nursing Home and the Town Hall.
Firefighters from several nearby towns responded to the fire, which was under control by about 5:30 p.m.
The cause is under investigation. Officials at the scene told WVIT-TV the fire may have started when a contractor was working to thaw frozen pipes.
