SPRING HILL (FOX 13) -

Wildlife officials recaptured a rogue lion who escaped from her pen at a sanctuary in Spring Hill this morning.

'Savannah,' a 7-year-old female lion, was spotted inside the main enclosure of the Survival Outreach Sanctuary at 22005 Bowman Road, following a search of more than an hour.

A Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman says the lioness dug her way out of her pen but never left the sanctuary itself, which is surrounded by a 10-foot fence.

"The animal never left the property and was never a danger to the general public," Baryl Martin stated.

Officials surrounded the lion and tranquilized her; they say they've placed her into a new cage.

Martin said the lion had found a secluded part of the park and appeared to be relaxing.

"It was just laying in the trees.  It was calm the entire time," he continued.

The lioness's owner, Judy Watson, was charged with one misdemeanor for conditions that led to an escape.

Sixteen FWC officers and four Pasco County deputies responded to the scene.
