Chasing The Snow Storm

Posted: Updated:
Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Overnight New Jersey got hit with the first real snow storm of the season and just hours before, people all over the Garden State were prepping for a winter wonderland.

In Ridgewood, New Jersey, trucks were being filled with salt and sand getting ready to hit the roads and make them as safe as possible for drivers.

Tim Gordon with Xtreme Snow Pros talked about what it takes to get his town ready for the snow.

“As it snows, add salt and then salt again at the end. Get it cleaned up nice so people don’t slip especially when you got a lot of people running in and out of the supermarkets and stuff. A lot of people could get hurt if you don’t do a good job,” he said.

Meanwhile, at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, experts geared up to track this storm, being referred to as “Hercules”, with the latest technology available.

In fact, decisions are made at this New Jersey based office that not only affects when schools will be closed and reopen, but government, the FAA and big businesses also make their decisions based on the NWS predictions.

Senior Meteorologist, Walter Drag, discussed how they are accurately able to make their weather predictions.

“If we’re putting out a warning or advisory we’re at least 80% confident that we’ll be in the ballpark of the amounts that were forecasted,” he said.

The NWS service says that they can be fairly certain with their predictions seven days out from when a storm will hit. Within 48 hours they have more of a grasp on tracking the storm, and 18 hours out they are 80% confident that their storm predictions are accurate.

It’s really all about the technology in Jersey City at the Office of Emergency Services as well. People there are responsible for getting all the necessary information out to first responders so they are able to help those in need as quickly as possible.

In fact, social media has played a key roll in getting the public and first responders information they need in real time.

Mayor Fulop was on Facebook and Twitter all day yesterday updating the people of Jersey City and Northern New Jersey about snow preps, shelters and emergency management.
