BETHLEHEM, Conn. (AP) - Bethlehem officials have dropped plans to purchase a World War II-era anti-aircraft gun to decorate the Town Green.

Voters decided in May to earmark money to improve the Green and replace a cannon melted down in 1942 to help the war effort. The Board of Selectmen agreed to pay $10,500 for a twin Hotchkiss 13.2-mm anti-aircraft gun.

The Republican-American reports that some residents criticized the decision. Opponents expressed anti-war sentiments and concerns that the machine gun did not fit with the green's character.

First Selectman Lenny Assard said he was not sure the anti-aircraft gun is appropriate.

Former Selectmen Edward A. Roden, who was defeated by Assard in the first selectman's race in November, said the anti-aircraft gun is not a symbol of war. He says it honors those who served.

A Delta Air Lines flight from La Guardia Airport to West Palm Beach, Florida, was diverted to Jacksonville because of a dispute between passengers over a reclining seat. Delta reportedly says the flight was diverted Monday night when a woman got into an argument with a passenger behind her when the woman was trying to recline her seat while the other passenger was trying to sleep on the tray table.
