`Fresh Prince of Bel Air` actor, James Avery, dies

CHICAGO, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

Actor James Avery, best known as Uncle Phil on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," has died.

TMZ reported that he had complications after open heart surgery.

Avery played Will Smith's uncle on the show.

His "Fresh Prince" co-star Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton, tweeted that Avery was a second father to him and that he will miss him greatly.

Fresh Prince ran for six seasons.

Since then, Avery has done a lot of voiceover work, and has had guest appearances on a number of shows.

James Avery is survived by his wife of 26 years, his stepson and his mother. He was only 68 years old.
