Dogs Are the Stars in 2014 Calendar

PHILADELPHIA -

You might call 2014 the year of the dog.  K-9s are the stars of the New Year at the Philadelphia Pet Hotel & Villas.

They released a 2014 calendar entitled "Throw Away Dogs."  It's designed to tell the stories of 12 lovable pooches once left for dead, and how they were given second chances at life.

"It was organized out of a heartbreak," said Carol Skaziak, the project's creator. "I was completely overwhelmed by dogs just being thrown away."

The "cover dog" is a German Shepard named Winchester, part of the Septa Police K9 Unit.

Skaziak said he was one day away from being euthanized when the Shepherds Hope Rescue group in New York donated him to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Only problem was the PPD did not have any room for him, Skaziak said.  He was then transferred to Septa Police where he was trained to become a bomb dog.

"He's trained on I believe around 20 different scents of explosives," said Winchester's handler, Septa Officer Jason Walters.

"Every day as soon as I walk out the door, he knows it's go time."

"I felt that was the most successful story because he's a working dog," added Skaziak.

The "Throw Away Dogs" calendar sells for $12 and can be purchased at www.phillypethotel.com

All proceeds are going to benefit New Leash on Life USA, a group that gives abandoned dogs a second chance.

Skaziak said so many calendars have been sold so far, they were able to buy a year's worth of dog food for the organization.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
