Philly Monsignor Posts $250k Bail, Awaits Release

PHILADELPHIA -

Monsignor William Lynn lawyer's confirmed he has posted bail that was set for $250,000 and surrendered his passport as they try to get him out of prison after 18 months. But he did not have to pay it alone. The archdiocese said they helped pay a portion of Lynn's bail so he could be released.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's office held a late news conference Tuesday night, criticizing that move.  

The District Attorney stated "it sends the wrong message and protected pedophiles."

The archdiocese said this does not change their commitment to assist support the survivors of sexual abuse on their journey toward healing or our dedicated efforts to ensure that all young people in our care are safe.

Lynn is the first U.S. church official ever convicted for his handling of abuse claims. But an appeals court now says the child-endangerment felony didn't apply to him.

Officials at the state prison in Waymart, in northeastern Pennsylvania, have not yet gotten a court order to release Lynn. The superintendent tells FOX 29 that Monsignor Lynn will not be released today, but will probably be released in the next few days.

Defense lawyer Thomas Bergstrom says he is trying to set up the required electronic monitoring.

Lynn is expected to live in Philadelphia while prosecutors ask the state Supreme Court to restore his conviction.
