Valerie Gordon: Don't Give Up Sweets In The New Year

Posted: Updated:

Her treats are mouth watering and delicious, Valerie Gordon of Valerie's Confections was here today with simply tempting treats from her brand new "Sweet" Cookbook.

Inspired recipes for elegant desserts, crowd-pleasing cookies, rustic pies, decadent chocolates and more are on display in SWEET, a 350-page, year-round companion for simple classics, reinvented by Valerie.

A self-taught baker, Valerie was inspired by the delight of unwrapping a box of chocolates when she made plans to open a shop in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. Valerie Confections opened in 2003 to immediate acclaim and an ardent fanbase. Today the company has grown exponentially - with several locations (SILVERLAKE, DOWNTOWN AT GRAND CENTRAL MARKET AND ECHO PARK) offering cakes, pastries, petit fours, preserves, and breakfast options.

Everything that is so special about Valerie Confections is in this book - from the Blum's Coffee Crunch Cake (p. 31) that Nora Ephron called "the greatest cake in history" to the cult favorite Durango Cookies (p. 247); from Thanksgiving offerings like Pumpkin Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust (p. 49), to new Christmas favorites like the Tiramisu Trifle (p. 229). There are dinner party pleasers like the Jasmine Panna Cotta (p. 225) and jams that light up a cheese platter or a toasted baguette (the Strawberry-Vanilla Bean, p. 276, goes perfectly with peanut butter).

In SWEET, Valerie shares her secrets for tempering chocolate (made easy with few steps), mixing and matching cakes with icings, and even packaging the perfect edible gift. These are desserts that are guaranteed to impress, for aficionados and home bakers alike.
