Trooper kills suspect after being shot in face

Posted: Updated:
PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) -

Saturday, loved ones of 24 year old Somourian Jamal Wingo are in agony, after he was shot and killed by a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper.

Putnam Sheriff detectives say just before one Saturday morning, Trooper Andrew Litzell attempted to make a routine traffic stop on Laurel and 2nd street in downtown Palatka.

Investigators say after Trooper Litzell stopped the vehicle, two men inside took off on foot.  One of the men opened fire on the trooper and shot him in the face.  It's unclear who fired the weapon, but Wingo became a casualty, dying on his birthday.

Crime scene investigators were able to recover a .25 caliber handgun that was used to fire at the State Trooper.

Putnam County detectives and the FDLE continue to investigate the circumstances around the shooting.
